Several Cal Athletes Making Outdoor Season Debuts This Weekend

BERKELEY – After kicking off the outdoor season in Berkeley two weekends ago at the Cal Outdoor Opener, California track & field will continue its campaign this weekend at the Hornet Invitational, held this year at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium this Friday-Saturday.

Last time out, the Golden Bears started off with a bang, recording 15 event wins and five podium sweeps at Edwards Stadium. Although the competition will be tougher this week with a handful of Division I teams (including rival Stanford, whose women ranked 12th nationally and its men 16th at the end of the indoor season) sending a large contingent to Sacramento, Cal will be sending a dangerous group of its own – 18 athletes set to compete for the Bears at the meet own spots on the program top 10 lists. The most recent of those entries belongs to junior Asjah Atkinson, whose 100m hurdles time of 13.82 at the Cal Opener moved her into a tie for eighth fastest in program history.

Two of Cal's 2024 indoor All-Americans – senior Busola Akinduro and junior David Foster – will be opening their outdoor seasons this weekend. Akinduro will appear in Friday's triple jump while Foster will race in the 100m on Saturday. The Bears will also field two outdoor program record-holders in senior Amari Turner and sophomore Carolina Visca, who will respectively compete in the pole vault (Friday) and javelin throw (Saturday).
