Lauren Martinez Records The Second-Best Pole Vault In School History

STANFORD, Calif. – The field events stood out as California track & field recorded six victories on day two of the Cardinal Classic at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
 
Lauren Martinez earned one of those victories as she recorded the second-best pole vault in school history. Martinez cleared 13-10.5 as she didn't miss an attempt on any of her first four bars. Martinez bettered her previous personal best of 13-9.25 to remain in second place on the school's all-time record book. She only trails Katie Morgan who holds the record at 13-11.75.
 
Annie Boos ran the 3000m steeplechase for the second time and set the freshman record for the second time. Boos bettered her mark by 10 seconds as she moved into fifth on the school's all-time record book. Boos' recorded a mark of 10:33.93 as she took fourth place, motoring past a handful of competitors on the final lap.
 
McKay Johnson picked up victories in both the shot put and the discus on Saturday. The sophomore recording marks of 63-4.25 in the shot put and 174-1 in the discus. Johnson wasn't the only Bear thrower to make an impact as the entire shot put group stood out.
 
The group entered the weekend ranked first in the USTFCCCA standing and they made their presence felt. Peter Simon took second with a mark of 62-2.25. Joshua Johnson set a new personal best with a throw of 59-3 as he finished fourth. Malik McMorris rounded out the group with a sixth place finish in 54-6.
 
The women's discus group swept the podium as Kendall Mader claimed the victory. Mader threw 167-10 for the win while Amarie Bremel took second in 162-4. Emma DeSilva rounded out the scoring with a throw of 162-1 to take third. Bremel also took second in the shot put as she set a new personal best with a throw of 47-7.00.
 
The Bears claimed victory in both the men's and women's triple jump thanks to Ashley Anderson and Tristan Meye. Anderson won with a mark of 42-0.00 while Meye recorded a distance of 49-11.75.
 
Three Bears recorded meet records on Saturday. The Cardinal Classic is in its third year, but Martinez, Anderson and McKay Johnson moved into the record book. Johnson did so for his shot put mark.
 
The Bears will return to action next weekend as they host the Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Edwards Stadium. Distance events and a select few field events will compete on Friday with the rest of the meet slated for Saturday in Berkeley.
