Cal Wins Big Meet In Dramatic Fashion
Men’s 4x400m Relay Wins Deciding Race To Clinch Big Meet Title
STANFORD – It all came down to the final race, but the Cal men's squad won the 125
th Big Meet in dramatic fashion. The women fell to Stanford 86-74 in the closest combined Big Meet score since 2000.
Â
The Cal men held an 80-78 lead with only one event remaining. The winner of the 4x400m relay takes home all five points available, meaning the winner of the event would take home the title.
Jasher Foster got the Bears started strong before passing to
Benjamin Micallef.
Adam Saleh made up some ground on the third leg to give
Paramveer Chohan the lead heading to the final event. Chohan, who has run anchor for the Bears' 4x400m team at the past two Big Meets, delivered holding off Stanford. The Bears finished in 3:11.22 to claim the race and the overall team title, setting off a celebration with the team chanting California while taking a victory lap on Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field.
In addition to the dramatic finish, Cal also recorded two school records, one meet record and seven all-time top 10 performances in school history.
Â
In the first event of the meet,
Chrissy Glasmann broke the school record in the javelin. The senior came out with the best throw of her career on the first attempt. Â Glasmann threw 50.29m/165-0 which surpassed the school record of 50.00m/164-0 that Glasmann recorded at the Pac-12/Big 10 Challenge last year in Tempe.
Â
Camryn Rogers set the school record in the hammer throw for the second consecutive meet. After recording a mark of 216-2 at the Stanford Invitational last weekend, Rogers came back and threw 67.40m/221-1 to destroy her previous mark. She also came within three centimeters of tying the Canadian U23 hammer throw record.
Â
After redshirting last year,
Iffy Joyner came back to set the Cal freshman record and notch the ninth-best discus throw in school history. Joyner launched a massive personal best by nearly 10 feet by recording a mark of 59.07m/193-9. Joyner took first place in the competition as
Malik McMorris took second, providing the Bears a crucial eight points in the discus at the end of the day. That 8-1 scoreline in the event lifted the Bears into their two-point advantage heading to the 4x400m relay.
Â
Despite winning the Pac-12 Championship last year, Kaukolahti was unable to crack the school's all-time top 10. That all changed on Saturday afternoon as the Finland native leaped a personal best of 16.50m/54-1.75 to move into the sixth spot on the school record book. Kaukolahti also claimed the victory for the Bears.
Â
Joshua Johnson continued his climb on the school's all-time shot put list. The sophomore threw 19.27m/63-2.75 to lead a Bears sweep of the shot put competition as Joyner took second and McMorris finished third. For the third time this outdoor season, Johnson bettered his mark. His Big Meet winning mark moved him into sixth all-time passing his previous best of 61-11.00.
Zion Corrales Nelson moved from eighth to sixth on the school's record book as she ran 23.56 in the 200m. That was part of a day that clinched 15 points for the Bears as she won both the 200m and 400m competitions while also running legs on both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Â
Silviu Bocancea also made his presence known in the hammer throw as he launched a PR of 68.82m/225-9. That move him past Travis Nutter and into second place on the school's all-time record book. Bocancea now only trails Jari Matinolli whose mark of 229-0 has stood since 1986.
Â
Annie Boos won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:14.91, which mark was just off her personal best and school record mark of 10:14.83 that she set a week ago at the Stanford Invitational. Boos also just missed the Big Meet record of 10:13.47, which has stood for 17 years.
Â
Overall, Cal claimed 10 wins on the men's side and seven wins on the women's side. The meet had a combined margin of 19 points as the men finished with an 85-78 victory while Stanford won 86-74 on the women's side. That was the closest the combined score has been since 2000, when Cal won 82.67-79.33 on the women's side and 84-79 on the men's side for an 8.33 margin.
Â
Cal will have next weekend off as they prepare to send student-athletes to Southern California. Cal will have a split squad that will have competitors at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. Sac Relays and the Beach Invitational.
