BERKELEY – After Cal slugged its way into early control of Friday's game against Stanford, the Bears couldn't sustain that momentum offensively.
They came up empty on a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the fifth inning, and the night shifted from that point on in a 10-7 defeat to the Cardinal in the opener of a three-game series at Evans Diamond.
Quentin Selma homered twice for the Bears and cleanup man
Korey Lee hammered a two-run shot, but it wasn't enough as Cal (28-16, 13-9 Pac-12) had its five-game winning streak snapped.
Stanford's Duke Kinamon had a two-homer night himself and finished 4-for-5 to pace the Cardinal (36-8, 18-4), which remained in a first-place tie with Oregon State.
After jumping out to a 6-4 lead after four innings, Cal was held off the scoreboard from that point on until Selma's second homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Three homers and seven runs often is enough to spell victory for the Bears. But they committed two errors that led to two unearned runs for the Cardinal, including one miscue in the seventh when the visitors scored twice to erase Cal's 6-5 lead.
If the Bears are looking for encouragement heading into Saturday afternoon's game, they can point to the fact they knocked around a Stanford pitching staff that entered the night having allowed a Pac-12-low 21 home runs and sported the conference's third-lowest ERA at 3.12.
Cal also sends to the mound its ace Saturday in junior right-hander
Jared Horn.
First baseman
Andrew Vaughn went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. He pulled into a tie for fourth place with Clint Hoover on Cal's career RBI list (157). Vaughn also is two homers away from tying Troy Penix for second place all-time at Cal in that category (Penix had 50).
Cameron Eden went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Lee upped his RBI total to 51, which keeps him fifth in the Pac-12.Â
After giving up a three-run homer in the first, Cal lefty
Arman Sabouri settled in and went five innings, giving up four runs with six strikeouts. But Cal pitchers allowed a season-high five homers total.
Saturday's 2:05 p.m. game will air live on the Pac-12 Network, as will Sunday's 12:05 p.m. series finale.
