BERKELEY – California men's tennis seniors
Bjorn Hoffmann and
Dominic Barretto clinched the Golden Bears' 4-0 wins over Sacramento State and San Francisco, respectively, in a windy Sunday doubleheader at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Bears improved to 4-2 with the victories.
Â
The Hornets' record fell to 1-3, while the Dons fell to 3-4.
Â
In the first match of the day, against Sacramento State, Cal's pair of
Yuta Kikuchi and
Jack Molloy clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Louis Chabut and Hermont Legaspi on court one. Earlier, the Bears'
Thomas Wright and
Mert Zincirli defeated Elliott Arnarp and Josh Snowdon-Poole, 6-2, on court one.
Â
Cal won four of six first sets in singles.
Kent Hunter doubled Cal's lead to 2-0 when he knocked off Snowdon-Poole, 7-5, 6-1, on court two.
Ben Draper followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Chabut on court three, before Hoffmann secured the match with a 6-3, 6-2 result over Arnarp on court four.
Â
"Our guys worked hard in practice all week, and we came out playing well today," said
Peter Wright, Cal's Director of Men's Tennis. "Sacramento State had a couple of guys back in their lineup today, and they played well. Our focus has been on improving our doubles, and I think we played better in doubles. It was a bit of a windy day, and our team adapted well to the conditions."
Â
In the day's second match, Cal's pair of
Paul Barretto and
Can Kaya clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over USF's Paul Giraud and Ori Maior on court one. The Bears' Draper and Hoffmann had earlier prevailed, 6-1, over Phuc Huynh and Mitch Johnson on court two.
Â
The Bears were dominant in singles against the Dons, winning all six first sets. Kikuchi, ranked 41st, quickly dispatched USF's 88th-ranked Nitzan Ricklis, 6-0, 6-1, on court one to give Cal a 2-0 lead. Draper then won his second singles match of the day when he beat Johnson. 6-1, 6-1, on court four, and Barretto ended the long day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Johan Garpered on court six.
Â
"Against USF, we were sharp in doubles and singles,"
Peter Wright said. "That's the type of match we like to be playing at this point in the season."
Â
Cal next plays on Feb. 22 at 1 p.m., when the Bears host Nevada at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Â
"The next two weeks are going to be spent building on our strengths and focusing on the details of playing successful tennis,"
Peter Wright added.
