LA JOLLA, Calif. – Three Cal men's tennis pairs advanced to Saturday's round of 16 in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, with Ben Draper and Bjorn Hoffmann, Yuta Kikuchi and Jack Molloy, and Kent Hunter and Thomas Wright winning on Friday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
 
Wright and Hunter, who opened tournament play with a round of 128 win on Thursday, won twice on Friday. The duo topped UC Irvine's Mike Mkrtchian and Matthew Sah, 8-3, in the round of 32 in the two Bears' final match of the day.
 
Molloy and Kikuchi defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Jake Berber and Daniel Park, 8-1, in the round of 32. Hoffmann and Draper, who are ranked 38th in this week's Oracle ITA poll, also won in the round of 32, completing an 8-4 win over Villanova's Dylan Flanagan and Tommy Mulflur on Friday evening.
 
The Cal pair of Dominic Barretto and Paul Barretto won twice to reach Friday's round of 32. But the brothers fell to an eighth-seeded team featuring Pepperdine head coach Adam Schaechterle and Pepperdine assistant coach Tassilo Schmid, 8-6.
 
The men's open tournament included Cal associate head coach Tyler Browne and partner Nicholas Brunner, with the fourth-seeded team beating Villanova's Will Gatti and Daniel Martinez, 8-1, in the round of 128 and topping Trent Miller/Jeffrey Tarango, 8-1, in the round of 64. But Browne and Brunner lost in the round of 32 to Pepperdine's 11th-seeded Daniel De Jonge and Adrian Oetzbach, 8-5.
 
Also, Cal team manager (and former Cal player) Ryan Cardiff teamed with his brother (and former Cal Poly player), Dan Cardiff, in La Jolla. The Cardiffs fell in the first round to Pepperdine's Enrique Luque Rico and Robert Shelton, 8-4. In the consolation draw, the Cardiffs beat Nic Meister and Casey Morris of CMS, 8-2, and advanced to the third round.
 
The tournament concludes on Sunday.
