Hoffmann, Draper Fall In Pacific Coast Semifinals
LA JOLLA, Calif. –
Bjorn Hoffmann and
Ben Draper's strong play at the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship ended on Sunday, when the 38th-ranked Cal men's tennis duo fell in the semifinals at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The Golden Bears lost to the third-seeded team of USC's Colter Smith and former Trojan Tanner Smith, 6-4, 6-7(5), 13-11.
"The quality of our doubles play has improved quite a bit this year, and it's mostly due to our guys working on having faster hands at the net and by having better court positioning," said
Peter Wright, Cal's Director of Men's Tennis. "This weekend most of our doubles teams had winning records including wins over Pepperdine and Stanford."
Draper and Hoffmann posted a 5-1 record in the doubles tournament,
Yuta Kikuchi and
Jack Molloy were 3-1,
Kent Hunter and
Thomas Wright had a 3-1 record, and
Paul Barretto and
Dominic Barretto were 1-1.
Cal returns to the courts on March 17, when the Bears host a doubleheader against Saint Mary's at 12 p.m. and UAB at 5 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
