STANFORD, Calif. – California men's tennis put multiple Golden Bears into the later rounds of singles and doubles at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday, with three Cal duos reaching the doubles quarterfinals and five Bears reaching the singles round of 16 at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
 
The regionals' singles finalists and doubles champions qualify for November's Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The last time Cal produced an automatic qualifier to fall nationals was two seasons ago, when Cal's Jack Molloy was the singles runner-up.
 
On Friday at Stanford, Cal's fourth-seeded and 58th-ranked pair of Paul Barretto and Can Kaya, which had a first-round bye on Friday, defeated Pacific's Nathan Hampton and Josef Southcombe, 8-3, in the round of 32 in their first match of the tournament. The two Bears then topped Fresno State's ninth-seeded Angus Bradshaw and Johannes Seeman, 8-5, in the round of 16 to book their tickets to Sunday's quarterfinals.
 
Also in the doubles round of 16, the Bears' fifth-seeded Jacob Brumm and Kent Hunter bested Gonzaga's Brandon Park and Vincent Rettke, 8-6, while the ninth-seeded Ben Draper and Bjorn Hoffmann knocked off Washington's Jack Davis and Ewen Lumsden, 8-7(4), to join Barretto and Kaya in the quarters. Yuta Kikuchi and Mert Zincirli – another of Cal's fifth-seeded doubles teams – got through the round of 32 but fell in the round of 16 to Santa Clara's ninth-seeded Vasileios Iliopoulis and Arthur Neuhaus, 8-6.
 
In the singles round of 32 on Saturday, the top-seeded and 75th-ranked Kikuchi won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, over Portland's Sema Pankin; the fifth-seeded and 121st-ranked Paul Barretto beat Santa Clara's Jesus Tapiador Barajas, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1; the ninth-seeded Hunter bested Washington's Lumsden, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1; the ninth-seeded Brumm eliminated Portland's Leo Hibi, 7-5, 6-3; and Dominic Barretto upset Oregon's Riki Oshima, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to Sunday's round of 16.
 
Sunday's action will begin with the doubles quarterfinals at 9:15 a.m., with the singles round of 16 slated to start at 10:45 a.m.
