Rogers’ Throw Sets Pair Of Records
Cal’s Star Thrower Set A New School And Facility Record On Friday
Day One Results
SEATTLE – Although senior
Camryn Rogers is more well-known for her prowess in the hammer throw, she made sure to remind California track & field fans on Friday afternoon that her weight throw skills are nothing to sneeze at, either. With a winning toss of 22.73m (74-7), Rogers broke her own school record in the event, also recording a new Dempsey Indoor facility record on the first day of the Pac-12 Invitational.
"Camryn executed just as planned," said assistant coach
Mohamad Saatara, who oversees the throws. "She has been training very patiently and diligently this year as she works to reach the technical and physical goals that we've set. We knew that we needed to increase her mark well over 22 meters in order for her to qualify for the NCAA Championships, as there are some very exceptional competitors out there pushing the event to entirely new levels of performance. She has a great deal of success in high-pressure qualification and championship competitions, and she was able to channel that experience today in her performance."
Sophomore
Rebecca Tomann joined Rogers at the top of the weight throw field with her third-place heave of 18.91m (62-0.5), rising to sixth-best in program history and marking her personal best yet as a Golden Bear.
Cal's jumpers also found success on Friday. Junior
Mason Mangum, who debuted in the event this season and has quickly found his stride, jumped from 10
th to 5
th in the program's all-time record book with a second-place mark of 7.58m (24-10.5). On the women's side, senior
Ijeoma Uche finished third after leaping 5.78m (18-11.75). The pole vault duo of junior
Amari Turner and sophomore
Paige Martin continued to improve, with Turner moving up one spot to 4
th all-time in program history after leaping to a 2nd-place 4.02m (13-2.25).
Sophomore
Jazlynn Shearer raced to an 8.32 finish in the 60m hurdles preliminary round, good for fourth in school history and qualifying for Saturday's final. Freshman and fellow hurdler Di'Niko (8.05) also qualified for the 60m hurdles final as Cal's lone representative in the men's race, while senior
Ezinne Abba (7.40) will take on the women's 60m dash final.
