RIO DE JANEIRO – The Cal swimmers captured more gold in the final day of swimming events on Saturday, putting an exclamation mark on another strong Olympic performance.
The Golden Bears brought home gold for the U.S. in the men's and women's 400m relays, with a total of six gold medals from Bears between the two events, and also set a world record in the process.
Cal has now won at least one medal for the sixth time in seven days of swimming competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics. On Saturday,
Dana Vollmer and
Kathleen Baker captured gold in the women's 400m relay with a time of 3:53.13, while
Ryan Murphy and
Nathan Adrian won gold in the men's 400m relay with a time of 3:27.95.
Tom Shields and
Abbey Weitzeil also earn gold medals for swimming the prelims of the relays.
In addition, Murphy set a world record with his time of 51.85 in the opening backstroke of the relay. The previous world record was 51.94 set by Aaron Peirsol in 2009. Murphy clocked in at 51.97 when he won gold in the 100m earlier in the Games. Murphy became the fifth Bear to win at least three gold medals in one Olympics. The others are also all swimmers - Mary T. Meagher (3, 1984), Matt Biondi (5, 1988),
Missy Franklin (4, 2012) and
Dana Vollmer (3, 2012).
Cal swimmers have now won at least one medal in every Olympic Games since 1976, won at least 10 medals four different times (1988, 2008, 2012, 2016), increased their medal count in every Olympics since 1996 (1996 – 1; 2000 – 2; 2004 – 7; 2008 – 10; 2012 – 16; 2016 – 19) and have combined for 45 medals over the past three Olympics.
Earlier in the day,
Olivier Siegelaar helped the Netherlands win the bronze medal in the eight final in men's rowing. The medal was the 200th all-time medal from a Cal athlete in the Summer Olympics. The Dutch finished with a time of 5:31.59. In the women's eight final,
Caileigh Filmer and the Canadians finished fifth with a time of 6:06.04.
Cal now owns 206 overall medals, as well as 20 thus far in the 2016 Games. The 20 medals ranks second all-time in the Cal ranks behind only the 23 medals won in London in 2012. The Bears have also captured 12 gold medals thus far, which ranks tied for second all-time with the 1948 Games in London. Cal won 15 gold medals in London in 2012.
Jahvid Best, the first retired NFL player to compete in track & field in the Summer Olympics, and the second overall, clocked a time of 10:39 in heat 7 of the prelims of the 100m, but did not qualify for the semifinals. He was running in the same heat as gold medalist and world-record holder Usain Bolt.
"It's a blessing, man," Best said after his race. "When I decided to run track last year, I had no idea that I was going to end up at the Olympics. It's just been a blessing. What I'm using this for is just experience. This is the first time I've run in front of a crowd of more than 500 people at a track event. This is just a blessing for me, and I'm looking forward to a bright future because I know I can master this sport just like I did football."
