Espitia played in 19 games with one start all over his first two seasons at Cal before missing the 2014 season due to a violation of team rules. He returned in the spring of 2015 but suffered an injury during spring practice that kept him from playing during the season before he left the program with one season of collegiate eligibility remaining. Espitia spent time at five different positions during his four seasons at Cal. He was recruited to Cal as a fullback and started his career there before moving to tight end during his 2012 freshman season. Espitia then began the 2013 campaign as an inside receiver, moved to safety during the season and then outside linebacker prior to the team's 2014 spring practices. He also played on Cal’s special during each of his first two seasons.
