STANFORD – California track & field's incredible start to the season continued on Saturday with another stellar showing in Day 2 of the Stanford Invitational, as the Bears (No. 18 men, No. 20 women) accumulated 12 new personal records and 5 program Top 10 marks throughout the afternoon.
Senior sprinter
Ezinne Abba followed up Friday's win in the 100m dash with another win in the 200m, finishing in 23.18 to move to third overall in program history, while classmate
Maisie Stevens followed just behind for the second straight day, setting a massive PR of 23.72 to break into Cal's Top 10 list. Both women also competed for the Bears in the 4x100m relay, along with freshmen
Jahzara Richardson and
Aysha Shaheed; together, the quartet combined for a winning time of 44.45 and a program Top 3 mark.
Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
Robyne Johnson was thrilled with the Bears' performance over the past two days. "To be doing so well and still seeing things that we can work on, that's a really good sign," she said.
Johnson had high praise for several members of the team, including Abba and Stevens. "Ezinne is really coming into her own – Coach (Ronnye) Harrison has done an incredible job with her, and she's getting better every single week," she said, "not to mention the season that Maisie is having. They're just great to have on our squad."
Both the men's and women's triple jumpers also impressed, with
Busola Akinduro,
Felicia Renelus and
Asha Fletcher taking first, second and fourth place, respectively, in the women's contest; Akinduro's PR of 13.01m (42-8.25) was 8
th-best in program history, while Renelus' own personal record of 12.83m (42-1.25) only just missed out on the No. 10 spot. On the men's side, freshman
Isaiah Shaw continued his upward momentum with a third-place (and personal-best) leap of 15.05m (49-4.5).
The men's 4x100m relay squad of
Kamau Carlisle,
George Monroe,
Christian Catlin and
David Foster put together the team's fastest time of the season, clocking in at a combined 40.19 to win second place, while the 4x400m unit of
Isaiah Shaw,
Josh Keller,
Will Sornberger and
Henry Larkin likewise raced to a season-best (and third-place) 3:10.48.
